Pregnancy Massage

Pregnancy massage, also known as prenatal massage, is a type of therapeutic bodywork specifically designed to cater to the needs of pregnant women. It focuses on the special needs of the mother-to-be as her body goes through the dramatic changes of pregnancy and is carried out as a stand-alone treatment.
Here are the key aspects and benefits of pregnancy massage.
Key Aspects of Pregnancy Massage
Techniques and Positions:
Side-Lying Position: Pregnant women are often positioned on their side, supported by pillows, to ensure comfort and safety.
Specialised Techniques: Gentle, soothing strokes and techniques are used to accommodate the sensitive and changing bodies of pregnant women. Deep tissue work is generally avoided.
Avoiding Certain Areas: Specific areas, such as certain pressure points that may induce contractions, are avoided during the massage.
Tailored to Pregnancy Stages:
First Trimester: Care is taken to avoid any potential stressors on the body, and the massage might be lighter.
Second and Third Trimesters: More focus on alleviating discomforts such as back pain, swollen feet, and leg cramps.
Qualified Practitioners:
Special Training: Practitioners are specially trained in prenatal massage techniques and understand the physiological changes during pregnancy.
Safety First: Ensuring the safety and comfort of both mother and baby is paramount.
Benefits of Pregnancy Massage
Relief from Physical Discomfort:
Reduced Back and Joint Pain: Helps alleviate the common back pain and joint discomfort associated with the weight and posture changes during pregnancy.
Reduced Swelling: Massage can help stimulate soft tissues to reduce the accumulation of fluids in swollen joints.
Improved Sleep: By promoting relaxation and reducing muscle tension, massage can improve sleep quality.
Enhanced Circulation:
Improved Blood and Lymph Flow: Helps in maintaining healthy circulation, which is crucial for both mother and baby.
Reduced Blood Pressure: Can help in reducing stress and improving cardiovascular health.
Emotional Well-Being:
Reduced Stress and Anxiety: The calming effects of massage can help reduce stress hormones and increase feelings of relaxation and well-being.
Mood Enhancement: Physical touch and relaxation can boost mood and help in managing the emotional fluctuations during pregnancy.
Preparation for Labour:
Relaxation of Muscles: Helps in relaxing muscles, which can be beneficial during labour.
Pain Management: Learning to relax and manage pain through massage can be helpful during childbirth.
Precautions and Considerations
Medical Clearance: It’s advisable for pregnant women to get clearance from their healthcare provider before starting prenatal massage.
High-Risk Pregnancies: Women with high-risk pregnancies should consult their doctor and may need to avoid certain types of massage.
Experienced Therapist: It’s important to choose a therapist who is experienced and certified in prenatal massage to ensure safety and efficacy. This is why, here at TherapyFit we only carry out pregnancy massages in a side-lying position from the second trimester onwards. We are aware that there are special pregnancy body cushions and pregnancy couches available to enable an expectant mum to lie in a prone, face down position, whilst receiving a massage, but as there is some controversy around timings and the support these offer, as each body is different, these specially designed devices may not provide enough support to every pregnant person. These could potentially put strain on the uterine ligaments that attach to the pelvis and sacrum and may potentially create intrauterine pressure. Until there is more evidence to ensure the safety of every expectant mum we treat, we will still be using the tried and tested side-lying and semi-reclined positions.
Overall, pregnancy massage is a valuable therapeutic practice that supports the health and well-being of pregnant women, helping them navigate the physical and emotional challenges of pregnancy.
